How to Refer a Patient

Any clinician with admitting rights may admit a patient to AWPH, either on an elective or emergency basis.

Your consulting suites will be supplied with Admission Kits and Patient Information Brochures which you are able to supply to your patients following consultation. For elective admissions, the completed kit may be returned to the hospital by either your rooms or by the patient. Online admission is also available for completion by the patient. Forms and brochures outlining the process can be supplied Admissions staff then process the kit and the patient is booked in. Patients will be contacted by the hospital with their admission details and given a quote for any out of pocket costs. An out-of-pocket checklist can be accessed here.

For emergency admissions, the hospital may be called on (02) 6022 4150 to determine bed availability and to give the patient details including:

  • Name
  • Date of Birth
  • Diagnosis
  • Insurance/Fund/Payment details
  • Requirement for an operating theatre

All patients will be required to present insurance details, show proof of WorkCover approval or pay the estimated cost of their stay if self-insured prior to admission.

The operating suites are covered by an on-call service after hours and are available for emergency surgery by the mutual convenience of the surgeon, the anaesthetist and the operating suite staff.

Access to the Karinya Clinic - Mental Health Unit is via the Easy Access number (02) 6022 4111 for both inpatient and day patient programs.

A referral from a GP or psychiatrist is needed for an assessment to occur. An assessment by one of the Mental Health Team will then take place and an individual management plan will be arranged to meet the particular person's need in either the inpatient or day patient program.
