Medication Safety Collaborative
Every year in Australia around 140,000 hospital admissions are associated with problems with the use of medicines. Medication Safety is a key strategic goal for the National Safety and Quality Council. A Medication Safety Taskforce and a National Medication Safety Breakthrough Collaborative have been established to develop and drive the 'platform for action' to accelerate improvements in medication safety for patients in Australia.

In September 2003 the Australian Quality and Safety Council selected Albury Wodonga Private Hospital (AWPH) to participate in a National Medication Safety Breakthrough Collaborative to look at reducing the incidence of harm by 50% to patients in medication management.

The Medication Safety Breakthrough Collaborative involves 75 teams from across Australia working together to improve medication safety.

AWPH has implemented improvements to fundamental processes associated with medication utilisation such as administration and documentation processes and our innovations have been sought from other hospitals. As a rural hospital we are very proud of our accomplishments at this forum.

APHA Award of Excellence
The Australia Private Hospitals Association (APHA) seeks to stimulate, encourage and recognise the pursuit of achievement of excellence among its members. These awards recognise private hospitals and individuals that have made an outstanding contribution to patient treatment and care, as well as management of hospital facilities. Recognition under the APHA Awards places the recipient at the forefront of Australian health care.

In October 2003 AWPH was runner up in the Australia Private Hospital's Association 'Award of Excellence' in the Category of '70 beds and over' of which we are very proud.

AWPH/La Trobe University Clinical School Opening
Albury Wodonga Private Hospital along with their clinical nursing partner, La Trobe University, celebrated the opening of the Clinical School of Nursing on November 18th. This innovative and unique partnership is the first of its kind in regional Australia.

Joined by Colleen Bromwich, Ramsay's NSW State Operations Manager and La Trobe's Head of the School of Nursing, Professor Ruth Endacott, the School was officially opened by Adjunct Professor Belinda Moyes. Ms Moyes is the former Principal Nurse of Victoria and is currently the Chair of the National Nursing and Nursing Education Taskforce. In her address, Ms Moyes outlined the directive of the taskforce and spoke of the importance of relationships between health care and education providers and the changing role of nursing in the future.

AWPH and La Trobe staff were present to celebrate the unveiling of the plaque and to enjoy a fabulous morning tea. CEO Ann Cassidy and Staff Development and Education Manager, Sally Squire were presented with Honorary Adjunct lecturer positions in recognition of their contribution to the Clinical School partnership.
